Leak detection is the process of finding where a pool is losing water. It starts by confirming there's a real leak versus normal evaporation (often with a simple bucket test), then isolating the source — the shell and tile, the skimmer and returns, the underground plumbing, or the equipment pad — using pressure testing, dye testing, and listening equipment. Once the leak is located, it can be repaired without tearing up the whole pool guessing.
A pool leak wastes hundreds or thousands of gallons, drives up your water and chemical bills, and — worse in Florida — can wash out the soil under the deck and around the shell, leading to settling and cracks. Leaks also let your carefully balanced water and chemicals drain away. Finding the source precisely means a targeted repair instead of an expensive, destructive dig.
Look into leak detection when you're adding water more than about a quarter to half an inch a day, when the autofill runs constantly, when you see wet or eroding spots around the deck and equipment, when air bubbles come from the returns, or when the water level keeps dropping to the same point and stops. The sooner it's found, the cheaper the fix.
